We were fortunate to pick up on some additional moisture this past week. At one point they were forecasting close to 75mm – we ended up with between 15mm to 36mm across the farm during the week. More up north, less on the south land. Crops are progressing well, as they are entering their growth phase that the daily requirements for moisture start to increase considerably. The upcoming week looks to be on the cool side with some chances for follow up moisture once again.
We finished the majority of our in crop herbicide – with only the second pass left on our latest planted canola. We also put growth regulator on our all our oats as well as about 25% of our wheat that has had decent moisture all season. The oat variety we grow is taller, and we have found that even on a drier year there is a benefit to growth regulator – shortens the plant (less material to put through combine) but also helps to keep it from breaking down while we wait for it to ripen in the fall. It was too late to apply on any of our barley – they likely won’t be too tall anyway, as it was a dry start to the season.
This next week we will be entering our fungicide window – the earlier planted barley will be getting into stage by mid-week. Our oats and earlier planted wheat will likely be next week. Canola will be a little while yet. At this time we are not sure on how much canola we will be spraying. The canola planted in drier areas are uneven, with some at 1-2 leaf while some is fully cabbaged out and will be bolting later this week. That makes application timing a little more difficult, and reduces the effectiveness of the fungicide.
