For the week of July 28th – Aug 3rd
It was a quiet week at the farm – most of our staff was either on holidays, or just getting back from holidays. This is the perfect time for people to take time off and get refreshed – ready for the harvest run!
The weather has been trending dry once again, one more rain would help enormously to finish this crop off. Most of the cereals are pushing through the soft dough stage, and canola is pretty much done flowering – pods are filling. You can start to see crop turning quicker in some areas again – which is a sign of lack of moisture. One more rain would have a fairly significant impact to our yield – and quality – as it will help put weight into the kernels. A more plump kernel equates to higher bushel weight, which is more desirable in cereal crops. Think of it as more meat, less bone. It also would help to plump up canola seeds – adding both yield and making it easier to harvest. Smaller canola seed is harder to thresh out when harvesting and not as easy to retain.
Will it rain? The forecast has been inconsistent – but has shown increasing prospects for rain by mid next week. Time will tell!
