Fungicide Spraying Getting Close to Done

For the week of June 30th – July 6th

The rain we had last weekend was welcome – the plants are growing quick as a result. We had a few warmer days, and one day above 30C, but then it cooled down again over the weekend. This is the time of year the plants are flowering and at the most sensitive for any kind of environmental stress. Optimal temperatures are 22-24C with overnight lows below 18C. When we get temperatures above 27C you can start loosing yield, especially in canola and oats. Overnight lows that stay above 18C can be almost as stressful to the plants. When it drops below 18C, it allows the plants to respire and “reset” for the next day.

We had a productive week of fungicide spraying. At the time of writing, we only have a day of wheat and a day of canola left to spray with fungicide. Staging in canola has been a little harder to match with optimal timing for application – due to some seeds that were stranded in dry dirt at seeding, and then some frost issues we had early June.

This next week looks to offer a chance of some moisture tonight (Sunday night) and then the next week to 10 days look to be dry. Temperatures look to be in the mid 20’s except a few days mid week which look to be in the 30’s.
