More Rain! Good Spraying Progress

For the week of June 9th-15th

We had another storm go through over the weekend. Sometimes the best rain events are the ones that were not forecasted and not expected (as opposed to the ones that were forecasted and didn’t receive!). This was the first thunderstorm of the season – ended up with 1/2″ to 1 1/4″ across the farm. The downside was it came with some significant hail, but at this crop stage it should still bounce back.

Was nice have have some moisture last week. Coupled with the rain over the weekend – the plants sure have taken off, especially the cereals.

When we have drier conditions early on in the season – the plants tend to “root down” – they go deeper in search for a sustainable moisture source lower down. This helps later in the season if it dries out. You can see by some of the photos that the roots are going down.

We had a good week of spraying. Had to shut down some days due to wind but still managed to finish the in crop herbicide in cereals and the 1st pass in our canola. We plan on doing a 2nd pass in our canola again – helps keep the fields clean, especially on a year like this where we have inconsistent growth stages due to the dry weather we had after planting.
Also busy hauling grain – lots of grain moving in the June/July timeframe. Some we are hauling ourselves, majority is going to destinations a lot farther away which we have contracts that they are responsible for the freight.

Next couple of weeks look to be cool – with chances for sporadic showers. Still waiting for the big rain event – hopefully that will come soon! The cool weather does reduce the evaporation rates, which helps.
