Harvest Stalled

For the week of September 1st to 7th
Harvest has had a slow start to say the least! This last week we were only able to harvest just under 400 acres.

With the barley all off, the next crop that is closest to maturity is oats. We had to swath all our oats to get them to dry down quicker – and it is still taking a long time for the green to come out and the seed to dry down. We also had a few days of showers, not a large amount of rain but enough to stall things out.

These oats we are currently harvesting are going into a specialty market for baby food. That means we have to take extra precautions to ensure the moisture is drier than normal, and the bins and grain grain dryer have been properly flushed and cleaned out. Since they have to be drier than the regular market – we are having to run this through our grain dryer to ensure consistent moisture. This also stops any “toxins” from starting to form.

Even though we didn’t harvest much, we were still busy. We were shuttling grain that has already been dried to other yards where we have smaller bins. This helps to keep space open around the grain dryer and blower system – it is looking like a year that most of our cereals will have to go through the dryer.

This next week looks to be favorable weather until the end of the week where forecast is calling for cooler temperatures and increasing chances for rain once again.
