For the week of August 11th to 17th
It was a full week of cool and wet conditions. We had some storms go through last Wednesday night that brought with it some heavy rain and strong winds. Fortunately there was very little damage as a result – there was some greater damage in the storm path north and south of our land, but we were spared. In all we ended up with between 10-30mm of rain across the farm.
Harvest is coming quick, if it wasn’t for the cool and wet conditions all of last week, we likely would have already started. The first fields that will be ready will be our 6-row Legacy barley. It is an earlier maturing variety, and we usually plant it at the start of seeding, to allow us to get an earlier jump to harvest. Our 2-row Synergy and Churchill barley will likely need another week before it is ready. It will be a while before our CPS wheat and canola will be ready for preharvest application. Preharvesting refers to spraying with glyphosate, which allows us to dry down the crop so it matures evenly, and allows the straw to break up easier when harvested. Our oats will be a while yet – the markets we sell into do not allow the use of preharvest glyphosate. Having to wait for oats to mature on their own delays our oat harvest by a week or two.
This week looks to be quite favorable for weather. Temperatures in the mid-20’s and only small chances of rain at mid week. We will need some heat to break down the high humidity that we are currently experiencing with the wet soil.
Hopefully we will have some harvest progress to report next week! Stay tuned! For more real time updates check out our Instagram and Facebook feeds.
