Just when it started to look like we might be having a much earlier start to spring – Mother Nature showed us that she is still in charge!
At the start of February snow had been melting due to the warm spells that we have been having – in fact you could start to see stubble in the fields, and the odd spot where there wasn’t much stubble you could start to see bare ground. Starting mid February until the end of the month we had two successive storms that brought another 2’ of snow. The first event was the bigger storm – it dropped 18” along with 50-70km winds. The second storm less than a week later dropped another 6” of snow. That has kept us busy pushing snow – and with all that loose snow anytime the wind picks up again, it blows causing drifts that need to be cleaned up again.
Aside from battling the weather, we have been busy hauling grain. Movement has been good – which has allowed us to be able to haul on a consistent basis.
The long term weather forecast is calling for some mild weather over the next week with a return to colder than normal weather to follow. With a deep snowpack we will definitely welcome some warmer temperatures to start the melt. We are hoping for a slower melt so we can recharge our subsoil moisture – and reduce the runoff.
